Nomination for the 2023 Los Angeles City Historical Society Annual Awards
The Los Angeles City Historical Society (LACHS) is reinstituting its annual awards which had temporarily stopped because of COVID. Our awards are presented during our annual gala currently planned for
Fall 2023. We are seeking nominations for the following awards:
The David G. Cameron Preservation Award is named for preservationist and attorney David Cameron who helped found the Los Angeles Conservancy and was instrumental in saving the 1926 Los Angeles Central Library. This honor is awarded for promoting preservation of our city’s physical heritage. Past recipients include: Susan Orlean, Glenn Creason, Jennifer A. Watts. Los Angeles Conservancy.
J. Thomas Owen History Award is named in honor of librarian Tom Owen, a long-time fixture and friends at the Los Angeles Central Library, and an inexhaustible font of local historical knowledge who was always eager to assist researchers. Past recipients include: Los Angeles Police Museum, D.J. Waldie, the owners of Angel City Press, Cecilia Rasmussen, and Glen Dawson.
Miriam Mathews Award honors the first African American librarian in the Los Angeles Public Library system, who was also a community activist and archivist. This award recognizes contributions to Los Angeles racial and ethnic past. Past recipients include: Dr. Alison Rose Jefferson, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Father Gregory Boyle, La Opinion, The Japanese American National Museum.
Special Recognition Award recognizes unique individuals and institutions in honor of their contributions to the history of Los Angeles and their service to the community. Past recipients include: Tom LaBonge. Lauren Bon, Doyce B. Nunis, Jr.
In 2023, the LACHS will inaugurate the Todd Gaydowski Leadership Award in honor of the long-term President of the LACHS. This award will recognize an individual who has demonstrated leadership in the field of historical research, authorship, publishing, grantmaking, records of historic site management. This first award will be awarded posthumously to Todd Gaydowski and applications for future awards will begin in 2024.
